Reflective insulation materials are better suited for hot climate

Reflective insulation materials are used to prevent transfer of heat from one side to another by reflecting radiation heat. Thus, they are a type of thermal insulation material that inhibit heat transfer by thermal radiation. However, they do not prevent heat transfer via conduction or convection. The barriers use materials that reflects radiant heat rather than absorbing it.

Reflective insulation is more effective in hot climates than in cool climates as it is used primarily to reduce summer heat gain and reduce cooling costs. Studies have shown that reflective insulation can reduce cooling costs 5% to 10% when used in a warm, sunny climate. Especially in summer, the sun’s radiant energy makes the roof hot and this heat travels by conduction through the roofing materials to the attic side of the roof. The heat so gained radiates onto the cooler attic surfaces, including the air ducts and the attic floor. Thus, by installing a proper reflective insulation in the underdeck, radiant heat transfer from the underside of the roof to the other surfaces in the attic can be reduced. Reflective insulation can also be profitably used in wall insulation too.

INSUreflector manufactured by Supreme Industries is a reflective insulation material made of polyethylene air bubble film (ABF) laminated with aluminium foil on one or both sides which can be used for underdeck and wall insulation purposes. With a low mass to air ratio, INSUreflector effectively blocks the radiant heat transfer.The bright surface of the Aluminium foil, which encases the FR polyethylene air bubble film material reflects 96% to 99% infra-red radiation received by the surface of the heated slated roof.

INSUreflector is chemically inert and is unaffected by alkalis, alcohol, detergents, petrochemical products and most mild acids. INSUreflector is environment friendly material as it is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and fibre free. Further, it conforms to ‘Class O’ for fire propagation and ‘Class I’ for surface spread of flame as per BS 476 Part 6 & Part 7, respectively.
